Complete The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening without one death recorded in your save file and you’ll unlock a secret end after the game’s credits.

This was the case for both versions of Link’s Awakening introduced back in the day, about the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, and it’s something the brand new Nintendo Switch variant of this game incorporates also.

After waking the Windfish and watching Koholint Island disappear, Link wakes up floating in the sea holding on to some driftwood. Had the whole adventure been a dream? No – because the hulking Windfish itself suddenly seems, flying overhead.

It is here the ending credits roll, and following those you’ll find a closing”The End” message.

But if you’ve defeated the whole of Link’s Awakening without dying, you’ll then get a heartwarming Easter egg featuring Marin, Link’s crush and closest wrestling ally.

During your experience, Marin tells you she wants nothing more than just depart Koholint herself, and will wish to the Windfish to make it occur.

“When I had been a seagull, I’d fly up to as I could! I would fly far away locations and sing for lots of people! … If I want to the Wind Fish, then I wonder whether my dream may come true”

And it is this you will get to determine whether you have that no-death save document – the implication being Marin obtained her wish and was spared, despite Koholint Island being not any longer.

In the Game Boy Color version, Link’s Awakening DX, a vision of Marin herself has been temporarily seen, before a seagull is shown flying off. The response here is not as that Marin has sprouted wings, and more her desire has come true.

At length, from the Nintendo Switch version, which will be a direct remaster of this DX ending. We see a vision of Marin, until the seagull flies off. Is Link simply recalling her if he sees that the seagull? Or has she been reincarnated as a spirit? The game lets you decide.

It is among many ways Link’s Awakening on Change stays true to the first game – that in turn was a huge reason I discovered a lot to appreciate about this particular movie. “Koholint deserves nothing less, and while Link must journey to leave its shores, this model will always be a place that keeps the island for other people to follow,” I wrote at Eurogamer’s Link’s Awakening Shift inspection.
